Wellbeing Hub
They tell you to be resilient. I’ll tell you what actually helps when you’re broken.
No “practice mindfulness” posters. No toxic positivity. Just honest guidance on surviving the emotional weight of nursing training — from someone who’s cried in the linen cupboard too.
The Wellbeing Conversation Nobody Wants to Have
If you’ve finished a 12-hour shift, sat in your car, and cried before you could even drive home — you’re not failing. You’re human. Nursing education talks endlessly about patient wellbeing, but when it comes to your mental health, the advice usually amounts to “make sure you take your breaks” and “speak to someone if you’re struggling.”
Let’s be honest. That’s not enough. When you’ve just watched someone die, or been shouted at by a relative, or feel like you don’t belong on the ward at all (hello, imposter syndrome), “practice self-care” feels like an insult. You don’t need a bubble bath. You need practical strategies that actually work in the real world of understaffed wards and emotional overload.
This hub exists because I’ve been where you are. I know what it’s like to question whether you’re cut out for this. I know the guilt of feeling like you’re not coping when everyone else seems fine. And I know that the best nurses are the ones who feel things deeply — that’s not a weakness, it’s why you’ll be good at this job.
Important: If you are in crisis, having thoughts of self-harm, or cannot keep yourself safe right now, this hub is not a substitute for professional help. Please contact your GP, call 111, or go straight to A&E. You do not have to struggle alone.
How to Use This Hub
Browse the categories below to find guidance on specific challenges. There’s no “right” order to read these — jump to whatever you’re struggling with right now. And remember: needing help is not failing.
You Are Not The Only One Feeling This Way
Studies consistently show that between 30–50% of student nurses report significant symptoms of anxiety, depression, or burnout during their training. The problem isn’t you — it’s a system that asks too much of people who are still learning. This hub gives you the tools to survive it.
